BEDHEAD is that part of the bed that is meant to stop pillows from slipping down the bed and also make a striking focal point in the bedroom. Some bedheads are purely decorative, while others serve a practical purpose like hanging up the mosquito net.

“Reading or having breakfast in bed is made more pleasant if you have something comfortable to lean on,” says Josephine Kayaga, a sales executive with Footsteps furniture in Kampala.

“Because pillows will have a firm base to lean against, they will be held in a required position without slipping down the bed, thus making reading in bed easy.” Apart from helping one to easily identify the position of the head, bedheads also add beauty to a bedroom.

Kayaga explains that because of the patterns usually used to add details, more colour and style is enhanced in what would have been a dull room.

There is quite a variety to choose from, if you went in many of the furniture show rooms. These include headboards covered in a fabric and hand-decorated wooden bedheads, which are all relatively easy to maintain.

For more comfort, Kayaga advises that a bedhead that is padded with foam and covered with fabric to match or co-ordinate with the rest of the room is one of the best options.

It is a good idea to choose a fabric in a colour that does not show head-marks quickly and that can be sprayed with a fabric cleaner or easily cleaned with a sponge. Alternatively, the fabric to look out for should be one that can easily be removed for regular washing. For instance, there are bedheads whose fabrics are just buttoned on them and can be removed for washing.

For a wooden bedhead, the one with a rich design and protected by vanish is the best.

Wooden beds with decorative bedheads cost between sh350,000 and sh1.5m, depending on the type of wood and size.
