LT. GEN. Edward Katumba Wamala is a brilliant academician. Katumba, the commander of the Land Forces, on Saturday graduated from Nkumba University with a first class degree in International Relations and Diplomacy.
The crowd referred to him as ‘teargas’ when his name was read out. He received a shield for the excellent performance from the University’s Chancellor Dr. Margie Kigozi during the university’s 10th graduation ceremony at Nkumba.
The graduation was momentarily stirred up when the master of ceremony called out Forum for Democratic Change leader, Col. Kiiza Besigye, for recognition. Besigye caused excitement when he waved to the crowd, attracting many V-sign flashes, and others shouting ‘Our hero.’
Some 797 students graduated. There were 77 post-graduates, and 455 bachelors’ degree graduands, while 243 people received diplomas and 100 got certificates.
State Minister for Higher Education Gabriel Opio represented the education and sports minister, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire.
Opio handed the institution’s charter certificate to Kigozi. He said granting the university a charter followed a thorough inspection by the National Council for Higher Education.
Nkumba is the third private university to get a charter, after the Uganda Christian University in Mukono and the Uganda Martyrs, Nkozi.
Nkumba’s Vice-Chancellor Prof. Senteza Kajubi asked the Government to preserve Mabira. “Cutting down the forests, to plant sugarcane and palm oil is the greatest form of ingratitude to God.â€
