THE Aruu MP, Odonga Otto, has threatened to sue the Central Police Station Division commander, Emmanuel Muhairwe, for illegal detention and assault, writes Joyce Namutebi.

Through his lawyers, Katuntu & Co. Advocates, Otto is demanding sh50m compensation for the injuries he allegedly suffered during his arrest and in detention.

“On April 20, while our client was in Police custody at the Central Police Station, you unlawfully assaulted him, causing bodily harm in breach of professional ethics and conduct expected of a Police officer in discharge of his duties,” Katuntu said in a letter to Muhairwe.

He added that Muhairwe illegally arrested Otto while he was going to meet the regional Police chief on the advice of the Inspector General of Police.

“We demand that you unreservedly and unconditionally admit liability and approach our offices to discuss measures aimed at your remitting sh50m compensation to our client for the loss and injuries he suffered as a result of your wanton disregard of duty to our client.”

Katuntu said Muhairwe would be charged if he ignores the demands.
Last week, Otto and the Kampala Central MP Erias Lukwago, were detained at Luzira Prison for allegedly breaking traffic regulations.
