KENYAN Nicholas Rokoine fired a birdie in sudden-death playoff to edge his compatriot Simon Ngigi to 2007 the Uganda Amateur Golf Open title at Kitante yesterday.

Kenyans had a 1-2-3 sweep.

The play-off on holes 12, 17, 18 had failed to break the deadlock between Rokoine and Ngigi forcing the contest into a sudden playoff on hole 12.

Rokoine, who finished second in the previous two editions of the tournament, was overjoyed to bid farewell to amateur golf after capturing the hitherto elusive title.

“It was a very challenging tournament. I needed to play very well to defeat him. It’s a memorable victory for me. I am satisfied with my amateur record and I will turn professional next week,” Rokoine commented. The 72-hole stroke-play tournament, sponsored by uganda telecom, was stretched to a playoff after Rokoine and Ngigi tied with an aggregate of one over par 285.

The 25-year-old Rokoine bogeyed the 18th hole on which he three-putted while Ngigi managed a par to tie the contest.

Ngigi who went in the final round trailing Rokoine by two strokes fired a closing round 71 to draw level with his compatriot who scored two over par 73.

Sixteen-year-old Kenya Greg Suow was third on 186 while Denis Onyango, the only Ugandan in the pressure group settled for fourth spot.

South African Johan Dubuissan who was leading after three rounds departed before the decisive round on Sunday afternoon.

The tournament was sponsored by uganda telecom, with Appliance World, Cell2 Cell and Azur water as co-sponsors.
