BRIG. Noble Mayombo has been taken to Nairobi for treatment of complications related to acute pancreatitis. The permanent secretary in the Ministry of Defence and one of the President’s most trusted aides was flown out of Kampala on Sunday night after suffering multi-organ failure.

Kampala International Hospital did not have the required medical apparatus to treat him. Mayombo, 42, who is also the Board Chairman of The New Vision, was first admitted at Kololo Hospital on Thursday night after feeling unwell.

His condition worsened and he was taken to Kampala International Hospital on Friday, where he was put on a life-supporting machine. He was being monitored by a team of Cuban, Israeli and Ugandan doctors, including the cardiac team that carried out the first open-heart operations in Uganda.

Plans to have the high-profile army officer flown to Tel Aviv in Israel were aborted when his condition was considered not fit for the long journey. He was admitted at Aga Khan Hospital and is due to be transferred to Nairobi Hospital. Doctors say his condition is “serious but stable”.

Speculations that the former Chief of Military Intelligence could have been poisoned were dismissed by the medical team. “The diagnosis is fulminant pancreatitis and that is what he has been treated for”, said Dr. Ian Clarke of International Hospital. “It has nothing to do with poisoning.”

The family has appealed to the public and the media to respect their right to privacy and not to indulge in speculations.

“We know that the public and the media will respect his privacy, understand the pain and concern of his family and join us in prayers for his speedy recovery”, said his brother, Phillip Winyi.
