THE Entebbe road junction, opposite Shoprite is to be redesigned, the works minister has said. John Nasasira told MPs on the physical infrastructure committee last Thursday that the newly constructed walkway will be demolished and turned into a lane.
He noted that the route from Kampala Road joining the junction was too narrow to accommodate heavy traffic. Nasasira’s declaration followed a complaint by MP Jane Alisemera that the road was poorly designed and could not handle heavy traffic.
The minister said the Japanese consultants, Nippon, who designed the junction, would review the plan. The works state minister, John Byabagambe, however, added that negotiations were still underway.
“The contractors were at first hesitant when we told them that we wanted to review the design. They complained that the Government had not appreciated their work. We want to hold more meetings with them to see whether they can do the review.â€
Nasasira also told the MPs that the ministry had contacted the Japanese government to carry out a comprehensive study on how to manage traffic in the city.
He argued that bodaboda and taxi stages could not be pushed out of the city centre without a comprehensive transport plan. MPs Nathan Byanyima and Grace Tubwita, however, insisted that the minister uses CHOGM to evict the taxi operators and cyclists from the city centre.
