BUSOGA Kingdom has shown dissatisfaction over failure by the Government to complete the renovation of the Kyabazinga’s palace at Igenge hill in Jinja district. During a Lukiiko (council) meeting that was opened by Kyabazinga Henry Wako Muloki on Thursday, members unanimously passed a resolution to write to President Yoweri Museveni and send a delegation to remind him of the promise.
“If the Government is committed, let them give us a time-frame for the construction. If they have pulled out, they should inform us and we look for alternative ways,†the Busoga deputy speaker, George William Mutyabule, asserted.
“During the burial of the Inhebantu (king’s wife), the President hailed the Kyabazinga as one of the leaders who do not disturb him. It seems he only listens to those who make a lot of noise,†he added.
Martin Musumba, the Busoga prime minister, in a speech read by his deputy, William Kasango, had earlier cast doubt on the willingness of the Government to rebuild the palace.
“It seems it was a campaign tool to solicit votes, which succeeded,†Musumba said. “We planned to host all First Ladies during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) later this year, but this will not be possible because of the bad state of the palace,†he said.
Kasango added that the renovation of the palace that was destroyed by government soldiers in the 1970s, was to cost over sh7b. He noted that only sh70m of sh5.2b meant for the first phase has been released by the Government.
The contractors, Mugoya Construction Company, abandoned the site when attempts to get more funds failed. The Kyabazinga currently resides at his home in Nakabango village in Mafubira sub-county.
