BRIGADIER Andrew Gutti has been appointed commandant of the Senior Command and Staff College at Kimaka in Jinja, replacing Maj. Gen. Benon Biraaro.
Biraaro was recently appointed to serve in the Planning Unit of the African Union (AU) at its headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Biraaro handed over to Gutti at a farewell party on Thursday presided over by the deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt. Gen. Ivan Koreta, who represented Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, the Chief of Defence Forces. Gutti has been the deputy commandant of the college.
“I have been appointed at the right time to serve Africa. I have to go to the headquarters in one week and begin planning for the African Union forces,†Biraaro said.
He urged senior officers to fight backwardness in the country, saying it had made Uganda lag behind in development.
“We must stick to the UPDF motto of ‘the struggle continues’ to fight this disease called backwardness.
“If we fail to understand national issues, then we will fall into problems,†Biraaro said.
The Kyabazinga, Henry Wako Muloki, hailed Biraaro for being innovative, effective and industrious during his term of office, adding that he kept Uganda’s flag shining in East Africa.
“Maj. Gen. Benon Biraaro has shown good leadership skills during his term of service at the College and this has uplifted Uganda’s image outside.
“I urge senior UPDF officers to borrow a leaf from him,†the Kyabazinga said.
