THE Forum for Democratic Change party president, Kizza Besigye, has said cutting down Mabira Forest will degrade the environment.

Speaking at an environmental awareness rally on Saturday at Kasubi, Besigye blamed the attempted give-away of the forest on the ‘endless greed of leaders in power who rule on the basis of their selfish interests at the expense of national interests.’

To show his concern for the environment, he planted a tree near the Kasubi tombs. Reports that Mabira Forest was to be given to Mehta for sugarcane production, about a month ago sparked off violent demonstrations in Kampala that left three people dead.

Besigye, who was accompanied by MPs Erias Lukwago and Beti Kamya, challenged the Government to account for funds generated from the sale of national enterprises.

He told the party supporters not to lose hope because President Yoweri Museveni’s support was ever decreasing.

Lukwago vowed that they would ignore the President’s directive not to hold political rallies at the Constitution Square.

“No retreat, no surrender. Come mambas, Kiboko squad, teargas or taking us to prison, we shall not stop exercising our freedom of speech and assembly.”
