UGANDA will have to dig deep if they are to make it to the Main Cup category of the Tangier 7s tournament that gets underway in Morocco today.

Pooled in Group C, Uganda, ranked fifth in the 16-team tournament, faces Kenya (2), Morocco (4) and Senegal (8) in the preliminary round today.

The national team, led by Timothy Mudoola, left on Wednesday for the event organised by the Confederation of Africa Rugby. Tolbert Onyango’s side will start the championship with a clash against hosts Morocco.

The 16 teams have been split into four groups and the top two in each will qualify for the Main Cup.

Uganda’s progress could be undermined by the absence of dependable players Allan Musoke, Anthony Kinene, Mathias Ochwo and Joel Anguyo. The four were kept out of the trip by injuries and tight work schedules.

But the expertise of 2006 MVP Edmond Tumusiime, Richard Lumu, Felix Lubega and Joel Anguyo will be crucial for Uganda.
