SIR — From China to Brazil, countries have begun setting aside tens of thousands of acres for the cultivation of jatropha — a plant many experts say is the most promising source for biodiesel.
At the same time, companies from Europe and India have begun buying up land throughout Africa to establish jatropha plantations.
Jatropha Plant is used for production of biofuel which is 100% natural and a biodegradable supplement for diesel. Jatropha’s use for production of biofuel is an exercise implementing sustainable solutions.
I am excited by the possibility of its wide-scale use in transport, electrical equipment, and other machines that run on petroleum or diesel. It is grown in wastelands, needs relatively little care or refinement, and is inedible — meaning it will not take food from the poor for the gas tanks of the rich.
I do hope that the President and all his science advisors (if there are any) take note.
This is better than giving land to sugar growers. Jatropha can grow along River Nile basin, from Lake Victoria to Nimule.
