THE High Court has stopped Makerere University developing the Katanga land where it recently evicted hundreds of residents.

This order followed a petition by the residents claiming that the university illegally evicted them.

Through the Legal Aid Project, the residents convinced the court to stop the university from developing the land until the case cleared.

They (residents) argued they had lived on the land for over ten years and have a land title held by Muganzi Awongererwa. They documented the losses incurred when their property was destroyed and want Makerere to compensate them.

The university in March fenced off two plots in the shanty suburb of Wandegeya and set up a security base to protect the plots measuring about 10 acres.
The university hired bailiffs who demolished makeshift structures built by residents claiming that they were encroachers.

The university’s convocation chairperson, Thomas Tayebwa, said they razed the buildings to construct a sh6b storeyed building.

He clarified that the demolished structures were those that were built after a caveat was placed on the land.
