THE son of the former chairman of the UPDF court martial, Gen. Elly Tumwine, died on Sunday after suffering an epileptic relapse at the family’s home in Nakasero, Kampala.
Eriya Tumwine Junior was born in 1983 during the National Resistance Army (NRA) bush war. Tumwine yesterday told The New Vision that Eriya travelled to Rwemikoma village in Kiruhura on Friday to represent him at a relative’s wedding.
Eriya, a student of Makerere University’s Faculty of Information technology, who had been accompanied by friends, decided to travel back to Kampala that night and had an attack. He returned home at 5:00am.
“In the morning, I left for a relative’s burial. But my wife called me at about 10:00am saying Junior was sick. I called the doctor who came in 15 minutes and found that he had died about an hour ago,†Tumwine said.
Eriya lost his mother, Joy Mulembe, a senior NRA officer during birth and spent 18 months under the care of a nurse called Mama Kawempe.
He was taken to his aunt’s home in Kazo, Kampala in 1985 and later developed epilepsy. He was treated in Nairobi and the attacks decreased but began having the attacks in 2005 after an accident in which his cousin and his father’s aide died.
“He was a very friendly, responsible and committed Christian. He was active in the Kampala Pentecostal Church cells at the university,†Tumwine said.
There will be a funeral service at All Saints Cathedral today at 10:00am and burial will take place in Rwemikoma, Kiruhura district at 1:00pm on Wednesday.
