NRM representatives in the Teso region are angry about the way their leader, former minister Capt. Mike Mukula, was arrested over allegations of misuse of health funds.

“You cannot arrest such a senior NRM mobiliser, a former minister and above all the vice-chairman of the NRM eastern region like a chicken thief,” complained Victor Ekesu, the NRM chairperson of Kaberamaido.

“A man who has tremendously contributed to the Movement should not have been treated like a criminal or terrorist. He even lost his Soroti seat in parliament because he campaigned for the Movement, which the Teso people were opposed to then,” he added.

“I hope this is not a repeat of what happened to former minister of Justice and Attorney General, Joseph Ekemu, also from Teso, who was taken to court, charged, and sentenced to two years in jail (for fraud).”

Scores of NRM leaders and supporters gathered at Garden Guest House in Soroti town yesterday to decide on what action to take. They agreed to send a delegation to Kampala to visit Mukula in Luzira Prison.

The delegation will include Ekesu, the NRM chairman for Soroti Charles Elasu and former Soroti mayor George Michael Egunyu. Others on the list are Soroti youth representative Peter Ogwang and Soroti councillors Robert Agwau and Hamed Ameet.

“If Mukula is not accorded justice, we will stage a demonstration in Kampala and at the NRM headquarters,” Elasu warned.
