BESIDES campaigning for the survival of Mabira Forest, Ugandans should also plant trees in their localities, the Kakuuto MP has advised.

“Some of you are crying for Mabira which is far away yet you have refused to plant trees in your areas,” Matthias Kasamba told residents of Kifamba sub-county in Rakai district.

“Even if Mabira is not cut now when our population is 27 million people, it may not survive in 10 years’ time when the population reaches 60 million.”

Kasamba said this on Saturday during the launch of a tree-planting campaign at Mbiriizi Primary School in Rakai district.
The ceremony, presided over by environment minister Maria Mutagamba, saw 12,000 trees planted.

Mutagamba stressed the need to plant community forests to protect the environment. She also directed farmers to vacate the wetlands.

Mutagamba recently tabled the Government white paper advocating for the give away of part of Mabira Forest.
The minister warned forest officials against threatening encroachers on forest reserves with eviction, claiming they are acting on Government orders.
