UGANDA’S first manufacturer of security and industrial footwear has started production, writes James Bakama.
Mukoko Investments, located in Lubaga as a pilot project, will over the next four months upgrade into a $2m factory at the Namanve Industrial Park.
The products include industrial safety shoes and boots for the army, police and other security firms.
They are being sold under the Tembo brand name. Twaha Lukwanzi, the project director, disclosed that the factory will have capacity to produce 700 pairs of shoes daily. It will have 180 workers.
Lukwanzi explained that under its current pilot status, the company is producing 50 pairs of shoes daily.
The company is also awaiting the Uganda National Bureau of Standards cerfitication, Lukwanzi said.
Plans are underway to broaden product range to include school shoes, he added.
“We are already being flooded with local and international orders,†Willem Van Delft, the project’s Dutch consultant boasted.
