Makerere University is searching for a financially stable person to replace Prof. Apolo Nsibambi as chancellor.

A five-member committee to head the hunt was commissioned at the university’s main building on Monday.

According Jane Frances Nabawanuka, the university legal adviser, the deadline for receiving nominations is July 2.

She urged the public to nominate candidates and advised that this should be done after consulting a candidate. “Since the university is in a financial crisis, priority will be given to financially stable candidates who cannot be corrupted,” Nabawanuka said.

A candidate should be a Ugandan aged between 55 and 75, have least a bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution, and be a person of high integrity and standing.

Chancellors and vice chancellors of other universities are not eligible.
Nsibambi, who is also the Prime Minister, was installed on November 17, 2003 as the first non-president chancellor of the university after the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 was amended.

In his May letter to the Visitor of Makerere, President Yoweri Museveni, Nsibambi said when his term of office expires in October, he did not want it to be renewed because he wanted to concentrate on his duties as prime minister.

Stephen Maloba, the chairperson of the committee, said the next chancellor will be appointed not later than August this year.

He explained that they will interview the best six candidates and recommend the best two to the University Council, which will forward one to the President for appointment.

Other members of the committee are Dr Venansius Baryamureeba (representing the University Senate and Makerere University Academic Staff Association), Bruce Balaba Kabaasa (Convocation), Christine Kiganda (University Council and the public) and Shifra Lukwago (staff member).
