THE Gulu branch of the Northern Uganda Social Action Fund (NUSAF) has earmarked sh350m to increase piped water coverage in the town.

David Omal, the NUSAF district technical officer, on Tuesday said sh191m would be spent on digging trenches and 5,800 metres of water pipes from Oitino dam to the water treatment plant in the town.

He explained that residents would be paid to provide the manual labour and the technical supervision would be done by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation.

Omal noted that the intervention in the sector was due to acute shortage of clean water in Gulu.

“The project started as a result of the frequent water shortage. This was not because we did not have water, but we could not draw the water from the dam to the treatment plant.”

He also pointed out that when complete, the project would meet three-quarters of the water demand in Gulu town.
