On Saturday evening, hundreds of people thronged the Kampala Serena Hotel for Proline Soccer Academy’s fundraising dinner, where Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand was the chief guest.

The soccer academy, which trains over 150 children from underprivileged families, is a brainchild of Mujib Kasule (a former player with KCC) and with Tushar Ruperelia. It aims at helping the children to escape a grim childhood.

Since the academy’s launch by Julian Ferdinand in September 2006, much has been done, but resources have been overstretched. Julian is the father of English League stars Rio and Anton Ferdinand (West Ham United).

Over sh20.6m was raised at the dinner. Coca Cola’s Kenneth Mutenyo also presented Kasule with an under 17 kit.
Ange Noir’s Charlie Lubega smiled home with a special Rio cap, Manchester United ball and Anton’s boots at sh3m, which were handed over to Lubega’s son, a likely recruit of the academy.

Similar stuff including Ronaldo and Rooney jerseys went to Juma Seiko, designer Sylvia Owori and Judith Heard. Lucky fans had their items autographed.
Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala donated sh0.5m.

Guests were as varying as their dress code. From Danish Ambassador Stig Barlying to unknown Man U fans.

The guests were entertained by Julianna, the Infinity dancers and the Blu*3 who presented Rio with their latest CD.
