The event, that will also act as the Western Athletics Championships, offers local athletes their last opportunity to qualify for the different international events, most especially the All Africa Games due in Algiers, Algeria next month.

With Justine Bayiga not taking part in Mbarara, the 100m and 400m competition in the women’s events will feature Emily Nanziri, Sarah Olobo and Emmanuelle Oroma. The top performers will walk off with cash prizes courtesy of sponsors MTN.

Waisswa Lukungu’s dominance in the men’s 400m will again come under check by Tororo’s Samuel Egadu, who has recovered from an injury. The competition that has attracted athletes from more than 32 districts.

“We are looking at both clubs and institutions to send in their athletes to qualify for the different international events as time is running out,” said local federation publicity secretary Namayo Mawerere.

The athletes are also targeting to qualify for the Africa Junior Championships (Burkina Faso) in August and the IAAF World Youth Championships in Ostrava, Czeslovakia later in the year.
