TOUR operators have penetrated the Russian market.

The move is expected to boost the number of Russian tourists to Uganda.

Close to 1,200 Russian middle and upmarket tourists visited last year.

The tourists enjoyed sport fishing, wild life, boat cruises on the Victoria Nile in Murchison Falls and Kazinga Channel in the Queen Elizabeth National Park.

They also undertook adventure sports like white water rafting, mountain biking, quad biking, culture and the history of Uganda.

“Before, there has not been any Ugandan tour operating company coordinating the Russian tourists,” noted Sylvia Kalembe, the senior information officer at Tourism Uganda.

“Due to language barrier, it has not been easy to get Russian tourists,” Kalembe disclosed in an interview in Kampala last week.

The industry boomed last year after the $1m CNN awareness campaign under “Gifted by Nature” brand.
