VENDORS who excel in selling copies of The New Vision are to be rewarded by the company.
A promotion, in which prizes will be given out every three months, kicks off in August, The New Vision chief executive, Robert Kabushenga, told over 300 vendors in Kampala on Wednesday.
“If you have been selling 10 papers and you go up to 20 and more, you will receive a gift. Our team will monitor your sales.â€
In addition, hardworking vendors will receive an extra reward at the end of each year, Kabushenga announced, prompting applause.
And to more applause, he said the company would maintain the vendors’ Christmas package.
He warned them against drunkenness and disappearing with clients’ money, particularly at junctions that have traffic lights.
“You should dress properly, shower regularly and brush your teeth every morning,†he advised them.
He hailed them for dramatically increasing the sales in the past months.
Following fears that they may be forced off the streets during the November Commonwealth summit, Kabushenga revealed that those operating next to big hotels in the city would receive special identity cards.
Stanley Kayongo, an agent in the city, announced the formation of a credit and savings association for the vendors.
According to Kalyango, Banamawulire Savings, Credit and Cooperative Organisation will have a share capital of sh50m.
He added that each share would be sold at sh200, with 50 as the minimum number of shares.
Kabushenga promised to help them access funds under the Bonna Bagaggawale (prosperity-for-all) programme.
The vendors complained that some people take newspapers without paying and that personnel from various security agencies intimidate them.
“Some people are harassing us. They take our papers without paying. They are responsible for the returned papers,†one lady lamented.
Kabushenga asked them to report to the company those harassing them.
