BUGANDA Road Court yesterday ordered the former gender minister, Zoe Bakoko Bakoru, to appear in court on August 9 or be arrested. The directive follows a recommendation by Justice Faith Mwondha, the Inspector General of Government for Interpol to arrest her.

Andrew Munanura, Bakoko’s lawyer, told court that his client was hospitalised at a London hospital.

But sources say she is working with the United Nations in the New York.
Munanura asked court to lift the warrant of arrest issued against Bakoko but the request was declined.

Bakoko is accused of abuse of office that led to the loss of sh8b by the National Social Security Fund (NSSF).

Bakoko and James Isabirye, a city businessman, are the remaining suspects who have not been to court to answer charges related to the NSSF saga.
Isabirye is wanted for offering a bribe worth $350,000 to Leonard Mpuuma, the former NSSF managing director.
Mpuuma appeared in court on Monday and was charged with bribery. He denied the charges and was remanded in Luzira Prison.

Mpuuma, however, failed to appear in court for mention of the case yesterday.
He was expected to appear jointly with Onegi Obel, who is out on bail.
Margaret Tibulya, the Chief Magistrate, extended Obel’s bail to August 9 when he will re-appear in court.

Milton Tiyo, the officer in-charge of Murchison Bay Prison, said Mpuuma was suffering from high blood pressure.
“Because of the drugs he was taking, he was advised not to attend court. When he was brought here, he developed high blood pressure. He met his lawyers and he discussed with them.”
