Like all businessmen, pastors should pay tax

Jul 03, 2007

SIR — I wish to defend Pastor Isaac Kiwewesi who is being lambasted for spending a lot of money on his wedding. I saw the bridal gown and was it not fabulous! Some people have alleged that he spent so much money while many in his flock are starving. I beg to differ.

Kiwewesi has no flock. He has customers. Whatever else may be claimed, the man and those others in the same occupation are businessmen and businesswomen. Therefore, any fuss about how they spend the money earned through their business acumen is misguided. He is entitled to spend his money anyway he chooses.

I have not heard any complaints about the four-wheel-drive station wagons complete with personalised number plates which these men and women of God drive, so why moan about a mere wedding?

I say to Kiwewesi, if a lavish wedding is what you wanted, you had every right to go for it. My only caveat to this ringing endorsement of our various pastors’ earnings and spending habits is that government should step in and tax these very successful businessmen and women as they tax everybody else.
