TWO men, allegedly posing as employees of the World Food Programme, have been arrested. Julius Masereka and Tony Mugisha alias James Mbabazi were arrested last week after the Police foiled their plan to fleece a farmers’ association.
Kampala Extra Police spokesman Simeo Nsubuga on Monday said Masereka, posing as a procurement officer and Mbabazi as a quality control officer, on June 18 met members of Busozi Farmers Association in Kamwenge district.
He said the suspected conmen told the Rev. Fr. Charles Oyo, one of the farmers, that their association had been offered a tender to supply maize to the food agency but needed sh4.5m to hasten the deal.
Oyo gave them sh100,000, promising to clear the balance later. But the suspicious Oyo called the World Food Programme, which said there was no such offer for the association.
“They alerted us and we arrested the conmen at Ggaba Seminary where they had gone to pick the balance,†Nsubuga said, as he paraded the two men.
Mugisha had a card showing he was an operations manager for the UN Mission in Congo, while Masereka had documents purportedly from the World Food Programme.
Meanwhile, a woman suspected of hiring a local defence unit official to kill her co-wife, has been arrested in Kampala.
Farida Nansikombi was arrested after Muwanga Bukenya, the security man, alerted the Police.
“She paid sh100,000 and was to give him sh500,000 after killing Sharon Nakisinde,†said Nsubuga.
