SIR — MultiChoice would like to respond to Mr. Bonnie Lwetabe’s letter “MultiChoice DStv is very disappointing!” published on Tuesday. We are concerned that Lwetabe does not see the evolution and growth of the MultiChoice services as having brought new television entertainment value.

When we launched satellite television in Uganda in 1996, it had a total of 24 channels – the premium service is now up to 50 video channels – plus radio and music channels and interactive services such as SuperSport Zone and Playjam games. MultiChoice offers three DStv bouquets.

This includes the Premium Bouquet (50 channels) at a cost of sh115,000 a month, the Compact Bouquet (27 channels) sh41,000 monthly and the Family Bouquet (22 channels) which costs sh31,000. Each of the bouquets is designed to suit Ugandan family viewing and thus caters for a range of television genres including news, music, children’s programmes, documentaries, movies, sport, religious and the added value audio channels.

These bouquets were designed to offer a different selection of channels at different price points. It is not possible to include all premium channels in smaller Compact and Family bouquets. Furthermore, programme repeats are an integral part of the television environment.

Channel providers internationally repeat movies and programmes to allow viewers to plan viewing time at their convenience. The purchasing of programme and movie rights is based on a model whereby programmes and movies are purchased for a certain number of screenings.

Repeats in the case of a multi-channel environment allow subscribers not to miss out in instances where two or three interesting programmes are flighted at the same time.
We welcome the chance to explain our service offering.
