LIRA lorry and bus owners and drivers have protested a sh40,000 daily tax levy by the municipal council for using the bus park, reports Patrick Okino.

The drivers on Tuesday boycotted the park after the mayor, Peter Owiny, asked Dynamic Engineering and Construction Ltd, to start collecting the money on July 1. They previously paid sh30,000.

Bus, taxi and pick-up drivers relocated to the Mayor’s Gardens on the Main Street and Kitgum stage. “We are not ready to pay the new rate,” the chairperson of Lira drivers, Fazil Juma, said.

Deputy mayor Mike Okidi said this was the first time the tax had been increased in 10 years. “It will not affect them. It is the passengers who will pay,” Okidi noted.
