TO Ugandans, the Africa Cup game between the Rugby Cranes and Zambia marks a threshold in the history of the sport, for a win will give Uganda the opportunity to become Africa’s top rugby playing nation. But to the Cranes, it is just another game.

“We might have a chance at going further than we have ever gone before,” national coach Yayiro Kasasa said after the win against Namibia. “But really it is just another game. That is the way we look at it, we play game by game. We win this one we will then play the next.

“ every game is different, every opponent is different. We just have to be focused.”

While not much is known about Zambia or the type of rugby they play, and while it may be ranked 57th by the International Rugby Board, as opposed to a high 31st for Uganda, the Rugby Cranes are not taking anything for granted.

“I spoke to the captain, Adrian Bukenya, before the team left,” Herbert Wafula, a union official, said. “The boys are all in high spirits but understand that Zambia is a hard team to beat at home. Although they were beaten 83-10 by Namibia in Windhoek, anything could happen in Lusaka. But they are confident and focused.”

Uganda has notched away wins against Kenya, twice, and against Madagascar, becoming the only team to beat the islanders at their home, including South Africa.

The Guinness Uganda Rugby Cup resumes with three second round matches today after being marred by no-shows last weekend, adds Paul Mbuga.

Saracens, Summerkamp, Boks and Rams all earned walkovers to the second round after their opponents, UCU Shepherds, Nile, KIU and Impis II respectively, all failed to honour their fixtures.

Mongers have already secured a bye to the next round after their would-be opponents, Rams, communicated that they were unable to honour the fixture slated for Entebbe.
