FIFTY-FIVE needy students from the Church of Uganda’s Kitgum Diocese have left for a 10-month sponsored study in Kampala. The diocesan planning and development officer, Paul Kibwota Muliya, said that the students would receive technical education at Bbira Vocational Training School in Kampala.

FIFTY-FIVE needy students from the Church of Uganda’s Kitgum Diocese have left for a 10-month sponsored study in Kampala. The diocesan planning and development officer, Paul Kibwota Muliya, said that the students would receive technical education at Bbira Vocational Training School in Kampala.
He said the beneficiaries who are primary seven certificate holders and secondary school drop-outs were selected from each of the Diocese’s 30 parishes.
Lubiri aids kids Gulu The Invisible Children has received a donation of scholastic materials and other items worth over sh2.5m from Lubiri Secondary School. The items included exercise books, pens and new trousers. The items were delivered by the headteacher, George Wamala-Lule accompanied by staff members of the school. The country director of the Invisible Children, based in Gulu, Jolly Laker-Okot said the items will benefit part of the 256 students under the Schools for Schools programme.
Science tools shop opens Arua A new agency dealing in laboratory equipment and science education consultancy, Chemlab (Uganda) Limited, was opened in Arua town last week. Its managing director, Jehoikim Ozimati, said they opened the agency to help schools in the region that has been facing difficulties in purchasing reagents and apparatus from Kampala. The difficulties have affected the performance of science subjects in the district.
50 children sponsored Lira Fifty children affected by the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency in Lango sub-region in northern Uganda have been sponsored by Capricorn High School. The headmaster, Maxwell Ocen, said displaced children were selected from Lira and Apac districts. He was speaking in an interview recently. Ocen said the 50 beneficiaries were all in Senior Three, adding that they would support them until they completed Senior Four.
Parents urged on religion Pader The Woman Member of Parliament Franka Akello, has advised parents to encourage their children to become priests and nuns so as to serve God. Akello was recently speaking at a ceremony to welcome the newly ordained deacon the Rev. Leonsyo Akena in Aruu County.
Nursing exam results out Kampala The Uganda Nurses and Midwives Examination Board has released this year’s examination results. A total of 445 candidates sat for the May 2007 examinations. Presenting the results at the Ministry of Education headquarters, recently, the secretary for the nursing body, Hellen Mukakalisa, said 26 out of 32 nursing training schools presented candidates for diplomas and certificates. The state minister for higher education, Gabriel Opio, received the results. These were the third examinations conducted by the nurses’ board. Four candidates sat for the diploma in comprehensive nursing and 441 for nursing and midwifery.
