Can I have a career in human medicine?

Jul 08, 2007

AS you develop career dreams, you need to note that there is a difference between what you want to do and what you can do. Having a strong desire to study medicine does not mean you can become a doctor.

Dear Jamesa,
I am a Senior Six student and since my childhood, I have always wanted to be a medical doctor. My dream was, however, shattered when I failed to perform Chemistry and Biology well in my O’ level. Because of that, I ended up taking a combination of Mathematics, Economics and Fine Art. Is there a way I can pursue a course within the discipline of health sciences? My career passion still lies in medicine. If not possible, are there any other courses that I can do with my subject combination?
Bill

Dear Bill,
AS you develop career dreams, you need to note that there is a difference between what you want to do and what you can do. Having a strong desire to study medicine does not mean you can become a doctor.

A career is a combination of ability, talents and personality. You can easily admire a career and yet lack the ability and talent to pursue it.

Failure to qualify for Medicine at university does not make you a failure.
It simply means that you need to identify your other abilities and utilise them.

Your subject combination is good, but it lacks Biology and Chemistry which are key subjects in the medical profession.
Let us look at some of the undergraduate programmes you can consider with your subject combination:

Makerere University Business School:
Bachelor of Commerce
Bachelor of Business Administration
Bachelor of Human Resource Management
Bachelor of International Business
Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management
Bachelor of Business Computing

Faculty of Technology, Makerere University:
Bachelor of Architecture
Bachelor of Science in Quantity Surveying
Bachelor of Science in Land Economics
Bachelor of Science in Construction Management

Institute of Statistics and applied Economics:
Bachelor of Statistics
Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Economics
Bachelor of Science in Business Statistics

There are also several other programmes that do not have specific subject requirements. You can check with the faculties of Social Sciences, Arts, Institute of Psychology, Adult and Community education and the School of Education.

Career choice begins with identifying your strength, abilities and talents.
Even with the right subject combination, you need to consider your interests, abilities and strength before you make a decision. A talk with a professional counsellor would help you make a more informed decision.
