LOCAL football body —— FUFA — has called an extra-ordinary assembly to discuss an attractive and sponsor-friendly league format, reports Norman Katende.

The one-day meeting will sit at Masaka’s Hotel Brovad on August 7, according to the federation Chief Executive Officer Charles Masembe.

“There are issues the executive believes should be addressed pretty fast ahead of the ordinary assembly,” explained Masembe.

He said the snap meeting will discuss the league format in line with turning it semi-professional. It will also discuss licensing of players and how to compile data, among other issues.

“All the issues aim at improving the league competition. We have to make the competition more attractive to the sponsors and spectators.”

Also in the pipeline will be the annual general assembly due in Jinja August 18.

Meanwhile, the construction of FUFA’s technical centre is likely to be realised soon after the project was approved by the world soccer body, FIFA.

Masembe said FIFA development officer Ashford Mamelodi called over the weekend from Kenya to confirm FIFA had approved the $0.4m (sh660m) project.

“We anticipate the project will start by the end of the month,” said Masembe of the centre set for Njeru.

It will be the second project under the FIFA Goal project, after FUFA House.

Mamelodi was in Kenya to confirm whether sanity had returned after FIFA’s intervention. Kenya has for years been embroiled in wrangles with parallel bodies running football.
Masembe also said that the artificial turf at Nakivubo will be done after the league closes.

“It was to start July 15 but we are yet to hear from FIFA engineers and the league is just winding up,” The sh1.4b project will be funded by FIFA.
