I got pain after sex
Dear Doctor,
I am 29 years old. I have been abstaining, but two weeks ago, I had sex twice in a week. Afterwards I got pain in my abdomen. Is it because it was my first time? What could be the problem?
Tinah

Dear Tinah,

Generally speaking, sex should not be painful. A virgin will have some discomfort after the first intercourse. Usually this passes within a few hours. If it persists, there may be another problem.
Sometimes a woman may get a urinary tract infection after sex. It is fairly common. Its symptoms include itching during the passing of urine and lower abdomen pain. To prevent contracting such infections, you should pass urine immediately after having sex.
The other possibility is an infection in the tubes, which also needs treatment.
If this problem persists for more than two days, consult a doctor.

How can I get rid of mouth wounds?
Dear Doctor,
I develop painful wounds on my tongue especially during cold weather. I was told it is an allergy. I take antibiotics and vitamins and the wounds go away in about a week, but come back. Can I get a permanent cure?
J

Dear J,

Such mouth wounds, which are quite common, are called apthous ulcers. The real cause is not clear.
There may be a problem with the immune system. The wounds come suddenly, are very painful and disappear after about a week. Their recurrence may be related to events like weather changes and increased stress.

They are not a sign of syphilis or HIV or allergy. They are differentiated from a common virus which causes ‘fever blisters’ because they occur in the inside of the mouth rather than the outside.
Unfortunately, we do not have a permanent cure. Drugs are used to decrease the pain.
We are not sure how to prevent them. The best advice is to continue using the pain and discomfort relieving medicines with your doctors’ advice.

My scrotum pains
Dear Doctor,
I have been experiencing mild pain in my scrotum for three weeks. I am scared. What should I do?
Clarence

Dear Clarence,

Pain in the scrotum is most often due to an infection of the tubes leading sperms out of the testes to the penis.
It may be a sexually transmitted disease which may come with symptoms like pain while passing urine.
You need to see a doctor immediately. The doctor will do an examination and recommend treatment. So please do not delay.
