Edward Kamana Wesonga, 61, is dead.

The well-known former Bubulo West MP died on Thursday afternoon after his car collided head-on with a truck.

The accident occurred at Kigombya village near Mukono town, at one of the traffic black spots on the Kampala-Jinja highway. An unidentified woman and her three-month-old baby nearby sustained injuries and were rushed to Mulago Hospital. They were reportedly not in critical condition. Family members said Wesonga left Mbale during the day for Kampala.

The Police said Wesonga, who was driving a Toyota saloon car, tried to overtake another vehicle but came face-to-face with a trailer heading to Jinja. The two vehicles had a head-on collision and swerved into a nearby ditch, hitting a boda-boda which was carrying a woman and a baby. The cyclist sped off.

The Police blamed the accident on reckless driving and speeding. The two vehicles were towed to Mukono police station.

Wesonga was born on February 2, 1946. He was elected into Parliament in 2001 and served one term. He lost the NRM primaries in 2006, prompting him to contest for Parliament as an independent. However, he lost to Fred Bukeni, the NRM candidate. Before entering Parliament, he worked as a procurement officer and later as a distribution manager of the African Development Project.
