THE Privatisation Unit may re-advertise the sell of the Lake Katwe Salt Project after receiving only two proposals from the earlier advert.

“After the proposal opening, anything might happen including re-advertising,” said Jim Mugunga, the agency’s spokesman.

He explained that the Government wanted a firm or person to invest in the several valuable assets belonging to the project which the Government is spending on maintenance.

The project’s assets include a five-storey salt processing plant near Lake Edward, land surrounding the eight mile salty Lake Katwe and developed land overlooking Lake Edward.

The factory ceased operations when a pilot project failed to deliver edible salt in 1986.

“The salt that was produced had a funny smell. So the Swiss investors who had set up the factory left and it has since been derelict,” said Eziron Balikyenga, who tends the premises.

Balikyenga said some of the equipment on the site was still in working condition.
