No medals for Uganda at All Africa games

THE Ugandan camp was left speechless here yesterday after seeing all six members of the boxing team exit from the All Africa Games.

It was unrealistic to expect featherweight Ismael Miwendo to salvage Ugandan pride after the pillars of the team like Sharif Bogere had exited two days ago.

Miwendo put up a feather-weight performance, forcing the referee to stop the contest in the third round after his opponent Chadi Mohlkodes raced to a 29-9 lead.

Boxing has been Uganda’s leading medal winner, and the performance will provoke an urgent inquest.

Ugandan boxing standards have declined from the days when the country was the African boxing champion in the 70s.

At the last games, Uganda returned with two bronze medals — a drop from two gold, silver and bronze from the 1999 games in Johannesburg.

The country’s medal hopes are now in athletics that starts tomorrow, and in badminton where singles player Edwin Ekiring is among the favourites.

Ekiring has benefitted from Olympic Solidarity training in Germany, from where he flew directly to Algiers.

Ekiring is rated number two in Africa after he won a single silver at the Africa Championships in May.

He, together with teammate Abraham Wogute, earned first round byes yesterday.

In athletics, Commonwealth Games 10000m gold medalist Boniface Kiprop will lead the fight for medals.
Athletics has won the country most of the 17 gold medals (9) since the All Africa Games started in 1965.

The team has however been hit by the absence of Dorcus Inzikuru — a silver medallist at the 5000m in 2003 — who, is struggling to overcome respiratory problems.
