THE Minister of State for Finance, Fred Omach , has launched two hydraform machines worth sh120m at Kaunda grounds in Gulu district. The machines will manufacture bricks for houses for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) who are returning to their villages, according to World Vision, the charity which made the donation.

Omach commended World Vision for the boost, saying it would enable displaced people to construct permanent houses in a short period of time. He revealed that the Japanese government had promised to donate other hydraform machines to the IDPs to speed up their resettlement.

The programme coordinator, Mark Avola, said one of the machines would be based in Pader to serve the displaced people there and also in Kitgum district. The other machine, to be installed in Gulu, will also serve displaced people in Amuru district, he added.

According to Sam Kilara, the World Vision outreach coordinator, this was their pilot project which would be expanded. He explained that each machine could produce between 3,500 to 4,000 bricks within eight hours a day.

“The machines are friendly to the environment because all you need is sand, soil and some little cement to make the bricks,” he added. Kilara said they would train resource persons in all sub-counties to mobilise and sensitise the beneficiaries on how to use the machines.

“We shall fuel the machines to help the community. We want expectant mothers to live in fairly good houses for the safety of both the mother and child,” he said. The outreach coordinator also advised the beneficiaries to use the donation well.
