FIRE on Friday afternoon gutted several shops on Iganga Main Street, leading to the loss of property worth millions of shillings. The fire that started shortly after 2:00pm in a building housing numerous shops opposite Stanbic bank, brought business to a standstill.

“The naked electric wires thrown about in these salons were obviously risky and it is no surprise a fire broke out,” a witness said.

Another said some of the new salons on the building had been dubiously connected to the main electricity supply.

But Charles Katungi, the district police commander, said the cause of the fire had not been established.

“Witnesses have given us some useful clues that will help us investigate the matter,” Katungi said.

Some unscrupulous people took advantage of the inferno to loot iron-sheets and merchandise from collapsing buildings, as shop owners wept.

The old iron-sheet premises built in the 1920s accommodated stationery and furniture shops, restaurants and salons.

A stationery shop belonging to former Iganga mayor Ismail Kyeyago was among those consumed by the flames before the police fire truck arrived from Jinja.

The proprietor of Heritage Club located near where the fire broke out, paid some men to fight back the flames that had threatened to consume his buildings, until the Fire Brigade arrived.
