TRULY Ugandan was the showcasing event tagged “Uganda Night” hosted by the Uganda mission in Rwanda on July 6. Apart from marketing Uganda’s numerous resources (some untapped), the ceremony was also meant to welcome Rwanda and Burundi into the East African family.

The guest list to the dinner-dance event at the luxurious Kigali Serena Hotel included diplomats, corporate executives in Rwanda and a cross-section of nationals from the five East African countries.

Uganda’s Ambassador to Rwanda and Burundi Richard Kabonero said the event, attended by over 200 guests, was co-financed by Serena Hotels, East African Breweries Ltd, Hima Cement, Roofings Ltd. and Kampala Casino. All except the latter are engaged in flourishing trade with Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Bob Kabonero, the brother of Richard Kabonero and proprietor of Kampala Casino, also attended.

The ambiance of the spacious Serena auditorium, entertainment and food, was a sumptuous affair. The tables were decorated in black and gold, teamed with napkins in colours of the Uganda flag.

The embassy carefully tagged these tables to key tourist sites in Uganda including national parks and historical sites easily recognisable on any international map.

Highlights included a screening of the “Presidential Tour of Uganda” a 60-minute documentary on the country’s picturesque flora, fauna and other landmark achievements. Filmed by the US- based Discovery Channel and narrated by President Yoweri Museveni, the film has been broadcast worldwide by the global television network since 2003.

Tasting more Ugandan cuisine, guests were treated to the sound and movements of Ndere Troupe, commanded by the comical Steven Rwangyezi.

As smiling waiters, some exchanging pleasantries in Luganda constantly refilled our glasses, songbird Juliana Kanyomozi took the microphone and invited all to the dance floor.

“No embassy has ever done this. It is a great event to unify our people,” remarked a leading dentist in Kigali.

The next day, the artistes entertained hundreds of Ugandans at a luncheon hosted by Kabonero at his residence in Rwanda.
