THE Karimojong will hold their first beauty contest tomorrow at Moroto Leslona Hotel.

The pageant that was supposed to take place last month was postponed at the last minute and rescheduled when the learned beauties from universities are around.

The beauty contest with the theme, The Face of Karamoja, is aimed at portraying and promoting the good image of the Karimojong and their culture. The event is the first of its kind in the region and has attracted over 25 contestants from the five districts of Karamoja region.

The contest will feature a play on the courtship and engagement for marriage in the Karimojong culture. This is to dispel the belief about Karimojong courtship.

According to the organising officer, Charles Pasha of Stone Age Records, the event is the most unifying factor the Karimojong have had in a long time.

The pageant will unite different ethnic and clan groups in the region. These include Bakora, Matheniko, Pokot(Upe), Jie, Dodoth and the Chekwil.

The contestants will exhibit the hides and skins dress, modernised bark cloth and other cultural attire to portray a new look for the Karimojong women.

It will also feature artistes like Pasha, Fabulous and the Karamoja acrobats. There will also be a special arrangement for VIP guests; it will include typical Karimojong cocktail. The VIP tickets range from diamond, to bronze and gold. They have been sold out.

The organiser and popular Karimojong artist, Charles Willy Pasha said Karamoja last featured in one of the beauty contests in the 1970s when one of its daughters, Nancy Nachuge was declared Miss Tourism.

Nachuge later joined the teaching profession and was later appointed the assistant resident district commissioner, Nakapiripirit, before she was promoted to deputy resident district commissioner, a position she served in Soroti and Mbale before she was dropped in 2005.
