MOSES Kipsiro ended Uganda’s agonising wait for a gold medal in the All Africa Games when he sprinted to victory in the 5000m final last evening.

Kipsiro ran a valiant race after losing one of his shoes in the penultimate lap.

He entered the final lap neck-to-neck with Menjo Kiprono and Tariiko Bekele, and an almighty sprint unfolded with 200m to go.

Kipsiro then engaged his famous strong kick over the home stretch to sprint to victory.

“I thank God for this win,” Kipsiro remarked.

“I lost my shoe and got worried, but thankfully, I made it.”

This is Uganda’s second medal after Edwin Ekiring won bronze in the badminton championships.

Kipsiro’s feat did much more than restore the pride of a nation battered by failure in Algiers ––– it catapulted Uganda from the foot of the medals’ table to a respectable if modest 20th.

Eagle-eyed followers of Kipsiro will attest the win comes as little surprise after some particularly impressive displays over the past year-and-a-half.

The 10,000m African champion was good value for his win.

It was the kick over the final stretch, for long the Achilles heel of several Ugandan long-distance runners —— notably Kiprop —— that delivered the gold medal in Algiers. Finally.
