THE Uganda People’s Defence Forces is probing the circumstances under which retired Capt. Juma Seiko demolished Tri-Star High School and several homes in Mukono district on Friday.

“We believe that the destruction of a school and homes is a matter of public concern which cannot go unattended to,” the UPDF spokesperson, Major Felix Kulayigye, said yesterday.

Being a reservist, Capt. Seiko was still subject to military law, Kulayigye stressed. “The UPDF has, therefore, instituted an investigation into the matter. If any wrongdoing on his part is found, he will be subjected to disciplinary action according to the law,” he added.

Seiko, the private aide to micro-finance minister Salim Saleh, recently won a suit against John Kizito, the school proprietor, for illegally building on his eight-acre piece of land in Anthony village.

A somber atmosphere hung over Tri-Star as the 300 students, dressed in white and orange uniforms and carrying books and pens, watched their school reduced to rubble, barely a month to their end of term exams. Several children could be seen wailing. “He should have left us to complete only this term,” a female student lamented.

The commissioner for secondary education, Yusuf Nsubuga, declined to comment, saying they needed more facts on the ground.
