PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni will preside over the Jinja centenary celebrations slated for Thursday. The town will also be celebrating becoming a city. Local government minister Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire backed Jinja municipality’s bid to become a city.

The President will launch an Environment Pedagogic Centre at Main Street Primary School. The centre was established to teach people how to sustainably care for the environment.

A framework for the city development strategy and the Jinja handbook will also be launched.

Several activities to celebrate Jinja’s existence for 100 years as an urban settlement and 50 years as a municipality began yesterday and will continue for the whole week.

The Mayor, Baswale Kezaala, said he would distribute mattresses, blankets and food to Jinja hospital, schools of the needy children, Kirinya prisons and other institutions on the Mayor’s Charity Day celebrations due today.

Kezaala said a regional conference on sustainable development attended by delegates of the Lake Victoria Regional Local Authorities Corporation from East Africa would take place within the week at Jinja Nile Resort.
