A commission of inquiry into the dealings of the Bugisu Co-operative Union that once exported Arabica coffee, has started in Mbale town. The four-man probe team instituted by the registrar of co-operative societies, F.E. Mwesigye, constitutes Francis Mulwana as its chairman, while other members include Titus Oddongiu, Colman Tumwine and William Wepukhulu.

They will investigate the circumstances surrounding the acquisition and utilisation of the union’s debt amounting to about $1,652,690 from M/S Jobbing Field Properties, alleged loss of coffee stocks valued at sh935m as reflected in the 2005/2006 audit report and establishing another loss of sh573m termed as ‘wash-out-costs’.

Others include the manner in which board members were allegedly paid retirement benefits worth sh25m and establishing the efficacy of the board and management of the union’s assets.
