THE process of accrediting journalists who will cover events of the Kampala Commonwealth summit in November has started.“We have started the process and encourage journalists to submit their applications early to ensure a smooth process,” the Commonwealth spokesperson, Eduardo del Buey, said in a press statement.

The launch of the exercise, which was also attended by Kagole Kivumbi, the chief spokesperson of Uganda CHOGM National Task Force, took place in London recently.

The launch was attended by media liaison officers from London-based High Commissions of Commonwealth Countries.

“Media facilities will be available only to accredited media representatives, and this includes journalists travelling as part of official delegates,” Buey added.

Delivery and receipt of digital applications, other than by the website, will be at the Uganda High Commission in London or through normal diplomatic channels only.

The deputy spokesperson for the CHOGM task force, Phillip Odida, said the deadline for the accreditation exercise is October 15.

“The local journalist needs to know that the Commonwealth Secretariat in London is the beginning and the end of the accreditation exercise. They are supposed to apply online with recommendations from their media houses,” he explained.

GlobeCast Africa, a media company that has covered the previous three Commonwealth summits in Australia, Nigeria, and Malta, was contracted by the Uganda government at $4.5m dollars (about sh7b) to manage the media coverage of CHOGM.

GlobeCast Africa will set up a media centre at Imperial Royale Hotel, where all necessary media equipment for the live coverage of CHOGM will be installed.

Odida revealed that the company has already received 23% of the money to get the necessary equipment.

Odida also revealed that the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation has been selected to act as the host broadcaster and, therefore, will have to work in partnership with GlobeCast Africa to ensure successful coverage of the historical event.

The summit will bring together state leaders from a quarter of the world’s nations, representing one-third of the world’s population.
