Akivembe, Uganda has trained hoteliers

EDITOR—I was inspired by Mr Paul Akivembe the general manager of Hotel Africana for his analysis in the article “hoteliers told to train Ugandans” published on July 16. Before tourism took root, the general feeling out there was that the institution was for school dropouts!

The government does not realise that it is partly to blame for ignoring its indigenous professionals in the area of hospitality management. I would like to inform Akivembe that in this country we have well- trained hoteliers from the school of Hotel Administration Ohio, USA, the famous Carduisberg Gesselshaft of Germany, Britain, Italy, Kenya Utalli etc.

Many of them were trained on taxpayers’ money but have no meaningful employment today! Another point is the sad mentality of some entrepreneurs who think foreigners are the only solution to their demands. Remember the PAMSU project which died naturally under the|Ministry of tourism.

President Museveni once wondered about what became of the qualified personnel of the defunct Uganda Hotels!

The showcase, until recently, was the Baxics catering consultancy services, a consortium of well-qualified Ugandan hoteliers, but who were denied the opportunity to compete favourably in the bid to provide hospitality and event management services for CHOGM.

Absurd! I implore the Ministry of tourism to open a data bank on hoteliers in Uganda and they will be overwhelmed by the turn-up. If we are to develop concepts in this country, we need the law of equity.
