KAMPALA - Scientists have been asked to take the advantage of the country’s biodiversity and actively engage in innovative research leading to drug development. In a speech read by the commissioner health services, Dr. Francis Runumi, at a symposium on drug discovery from African flora at Hotel Africana on Monday, the Health Minister, Dr. Stephen Mallinga, advised researchers to utilise the research fund established by the President to promote innovative research in science and technology for socio-economic development. “The fund is currently under-utilised,” he added.

Unity to solve lake problems
JINJA - The challenges facing Lake Victoria will be overcome through close collaboration, according to Gordon Mumbo, the Nile Basin Initiative regional manager. The UN Habitat had warned in a report that the livelihood of 25 million people in the Lake Victoria region were in danger due to the continued destruction of the lakes’ resources. “We must cooperate to build a community of common interest. The lake basin contributes the highest taxes, yet its people are the poorest,” Mumbo told participants at the annual general assembly of the Lake Victoria Regional Local Authorities Cooperation at the Jinja Nile Resort last week.

Muslims tipped on marriage
MASAKA - The district kadhi, Sheikh Huzairu Kiruta, has criticised Muslims who marry off their young daughters. Kiruta made the remarks during the Speech Day for Kidda Masgid Vocational Primary School in Buwunga sub-county on Sunday. “Many Muslims encourage their daughters into marriage before completing their education, this retards us. Women are competing in many aspects including leadership.”

Court halts Kyambogo polls

KAMPALA - The High Court lady Justice, Stella Arach-Amoko, has halted the promotion and election of Kyambogo University heads of department and faculty deans pending a judicial review of the University Election Laws. The directive followed an application by two Kyambogo lecturers who claimed many people listed to vote were ineligible.
