Students debate use of ICT for CHOGM

THE I-Network-sponsored debates between schools have gone to a higher level of engagement in intellectual argument between students of different schools around Kampala.

The students debate on how youth in Uganda can benefit from the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) due in November.

Recently, 45 students from five schools discussed the theme “Can students play a significant role in using ICTs during CHOGM?” at Kololo Secondary School.

In the midst of a heated debate, one of the students articulated how an ICT component could be put to use by youth in order to benefit from CHOGM.

“The youth can target a CHOGM anthem. They can create a ringtone for mobile phones from this anthem. This can then be sold to persons at an affordable price,” said one student proposing the theme.

Robert Lutaaya, the coordinator for youth at I-Network, said the debate revealed a vast amount of knowledge and ideas from the students.

The headteacher of Kololo SS, Margaret Watuwa said: “I think we have the capacity to implement some of the ideas brought forth by the students. We are very supportive of such programmes like I-Network’s innovative debates.”

Lutaaya said the next meeting he will hold is going to target teachers from all over the country and it will centre around ICTs in schools.

A report on this debate is currently being compiled by I-Network and the findings will be shared with the Government and NGOs.
