Inzikuru is not on national service

EDITOR—I am not impressed by the way the issue of Uganda’s former World Steeple Chase champion Dorcus Inzikuru’s pregnancy has been handled by the media. The girl has been ‘undressed in public’ as if she does not reserve the right to take independent marital decisions.

EDITOR—I am not impressed by the way the issue of Uganda’s former World Steeple Chase champion Dorcus Inzikuru’s pregnancy has been handled by the media. The girl has been ‘undressed in public’ as if she does not reserve the right to take independent marital decisions.

Joseph Kabuleta in his article, “Inzzi now a village gazelle” went too far by attempting to suggest what, in his opinion, should have been Inzikuru’s “appropriate” pregnancy schedule!

Kabuleta, himself a parent, surely knows (or perhaps has forgotten) that issues to do with marital duties are sacred and cannot be determined by public opinion. Inzikuru has an absolute right to determine when to have a child irrespective of what anyone else expects of her. This is a decision she must have taken with her husband, and rightly so. Kabuleta is also wrong to judge her decision to get married.

Perhaps he thinks it was accidental. Maybe he was thinking of the millions he estimates she would have got had she engaged in extra world competitions before conceiving. Life is not just about money and money has never been a fulfilment in life.

Besides, I am so surprised that suddenly Inzikuru’s career is considered a national obligation! The fact that she won gold a couple of times raising Uganda’s flag high, does not mean that she is on national service.
