FROM September all boda boda cyclists without the minimum requirements will not operate from the city centre.
Boda bodas are required to have a driving permit, a passenger service licence, a helmet, safety jacket and uniform.
The spokesperson of the National Federation of Boda Boda Organisations, Stephen Ssemanda yesterday said the requirements were set by the Police as a security measure.
“Those cyclists trained by the Police and who were given permits are the ones who will stay in the city,†he said, adding that the passenger service licences cost sh10,000.
The standards, he said, will help streamline the operation of the boda boda cyclists ahead of the Commonwealth Summit in November.
According to the Kampala Union of Boda Boda Cyclists Association, 4,000 boda boda cyclists operate in the city but sources said the number keeps rising.
