FUFA has received US$1.3m (about sh2.1bn) from the Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) for the development of women and youth soccer in the country. The money came in installments.

The disbursement is part of the “Contract of Africa” project that was launched in 2005 by Africa’s soccer governing body. The project is meant to spur the speedy development of football on the continent. Uganda was one of 11 African countries that benefited from the project during the 2006/07 year.

FUFA president Lawrence Mulindwa acknowledged receipt of the money and said that some activities are already going on.

“We have already held women football galas in sub counties across the country to identify players for the national team,” Mulindwa stated.

On top of women soccer, the money is also supposed to construct pitches for the U-15 teams throughout the country and also purchase 1,500 footballs.

Mulindwa said that the federation has also donated footballs at youth football tournaments, the most recent at the national U-17 tournament in July which had all the 13 zones receiving balls.

Other countries that have also received the money for the year 2006-2007 include Benin, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Swaziland and Tanzania.

Contract for Africa aims at maximising operations of national associations and putting in place football infrastructure.
